too many churches and not enough truth;

too many lives to lead and not enough time.

· NAME: Yagami Light
· FANDOM: Death Note
· AU OR OU: AU
· AGE: 18
· PERSONALITY: To all outward appearances, Light is the perfect student and son. Serious, dedicated, brilliant, and charming -- he seems nothing short of absolutely flawless. Despite his years and years of hard work and accomplishment, Light seems to be neither reclusively unfriendly nor arrogant. He takes things seriously, true enough, and he always appears confident and collected to the extreme; but he is capable of being engaging, funny, relaxed enough to be considered sociable. He can take criticism, laugh at himself, admit his flaws.

Because that's what a perfect person can do. Arrogance is imperfection, and Light is hellbent on displaying himself as perfect. After all, if he's not perfect people will be disappointed with him. And he wants people to be dazzled; to be proud of him; to be happy.

It comes down to control, for the most part. Light's entire life has been dictated by the expectations his image-conscious parents have placed upon him; oh, in theory he could choose what school he wanted to but of course he had to go to the best, because he was so brilliant, it would be all but criminal if he didn't. Of course someone who grew up like that is going to have major control issues. Light hates not being in control. He hates not having a plan; loves the feeling of having power over what people think and feel; hates not being able to do something. The need to act is imperative to Light; he's addicted to doing, because his whole sense of self-worth is based on his accomplishments as they are recognized by other people. He wants to do more, and more, and more; he wants to be in power, too. He wants to be able to make people happy, and safe.

Light is also intensely devoted to his ideals, morals and causes. Most of all he thinks he has to apply those morals to everything, somehow affect change to further those ideals and causes, because Light has learned over the course of his mind that you can think and feel whatever you like but it only matters if you bring it into the world outside you. If you change the world outside you. And Light wants to matter. He wants to be noticed. (He doesn't want to be bored any more.)

Is it surprising that someone with a personality so intense, and with so much pressure on him, should snap? Not really. The roots for manifestation of Light's breakdown can be traced to the rest of his personality. Kira is his need for control and his desire to change the world and help people manifest. The question, of course, arises: if Light, in his rare moments of utter clarity, is horrified by the mere notion of what he considers himself to be in a psychotic state, then is he a murderer? Is he really someone capable of completely ruthlessly sacrificing some of his morals, and even his humanity, for the sake of his ideals? Where does the lie between his insanity and the truth really lie?
· HISTORY: Groomed from day one to excel. The best schools, the best grades, more extracurricular activities than seem humanly possible. Precocity and achievement distinguishing almost every day.

That's Light's life in a nutshell.

There's not too much to tell, really -- at least not in terms of his youth before university. His mother doted on him, and doted on his test results even more. His father was frequently away at work. He worked hard, trying to satisfy and impress them both, he doted on Sayu, he won awards and trophies and medals. He graduated from high school with top marks and was accepted, complete with scholarships, to To-oh University.

It was about one month into university that Light's sanity started to fall apart. Maybe it was the increased pressure; maybe it was just something that had been building for years. It's difficult to pinpoint the exact moment where Light's grasp on reality slipped, or how the psychosis first manifested itself. But manifest itself it did -- in the visual and auditory hallucinations (Ryuuk, the Death Note title on an ordinary black notebook, the reports of mysterious criminal deaths on the radio), and the paranoid delusions (that writing their names in the "Death Note" would kill criminals; that there are police cameras in his room watching him).

Because part of the entire delusion is that nobody can know he's Kira, Light has managed to keep presenting an entirely normal appearance to everybody. Nobody -- not his family, not his teachers, not even his girlfriend Takada Kiyomi -- is aware that anything is wrong. For that matter, neither is Light himself... except in a rare handful of sane moments.
